Posture checklist
Rest position: Sing the song—Rest position, feet in line, scroll out front, that’s mighty fine. Check your bridge where it should be, peeking out at you and me. Now it’s time to take a bow, 1 2 3 and so that’s how.
To get into playing position:
- Feet together
- Make a V with your toes
- Take a step with your left foot (violin-side foot)
- Grasp the shoulder of the violin with your violin hand
- Make a Statue of Liberty
- Put the end button on your ear
- Slide the violin down to your shoulder
- Get comfortable holding the violin between your jaw and your shoulder
- Hold the violin with just your jaw and shoulder for 10 seconds
Left hand position:
- For pops: Anchor left hand thumb at corner between violin’s neck and shoulder. Left hand fingers should be curved.
- For scales: Check to make sure you have a beautiful straight wrist and curved fingers! For A major scale, second finger should be right behind 3rd finger on the A and E strings.
Right hand position (bow hand):
- Right arm and hand should be floppy like a cooked noodle!
- Plop right hand on bow. Keep fingers loose!
- Curve thumb around clip at frog.
- Put end of ring finger on dot.
- Curve index and middle fingers around grip.
- Balance pinky on the end of the stick.
Now you are ready to play with a beautiful sound!
